Bonita s volleyball program has had a solid group of young and veteran players which has carried it to win seven Miramonte League championship titles in the last eight years. Our goal every year is to be CIF champions and we ve fallen short of that. But we have still achieved a lot of success and that is a tribute to having good players. This season, it was the Bearcats seniority that helped them to a 18-8 record and a trip to the State playoffs, said Contreras.

During the 2009 season, Bonita High School s volleyball team attained many firsts for the program, including the first opportunity in school history to play in the State Playoffs. The Bearcats captured their third consecutive Miramonte League Volleyball Championship, making their way to the CIF finals at Cypress College. In addition to these accomplishments, the Bearcats boasted the best record in program history and garnered a plethora of awards.

The season began with a tough pre-season schedule which helped prepare the Bearcats for league play. Bonita opened the Miramonte season with huge victories, sweeping Charter Oak, Los Altos, Diamond Ranch, and Wilson. These were followed by a difficult loss to Division 2 Walnut High School. Nonetheless, this momentary setback inspired six straight victories during the heart of league competition, including a victory against defending CIF champions Brentwood and avenging their earlier season loss to Walnut, during this span. The team s combined efforts helped propel them into playoffs earning them a bye during the first round.

In their second round of playoffs, the Bearcats absolutely demolished Silverado High School. In the Quarter-Finals Bonita put up a great fight against Maranatha, advancing to the semifinals where they handily defeated Palm Springs. Playing in the CIF final match, the Bearcats took on a very familiar Los Altos squad, squaring off for the third time this season. Despite their previous two wins against Los Altos, Bonita started off slowly and quickly faced a one set deficit against an offensivelytalented and defensively-relentless opponent. With their backs against the wall, however, the Bearcats rallied back and won the second and third sets, but lost the fourth, forcing a fifth set. But this time Los Altos came up with the big plays down the stretch, earning the 15-10 victory. Bonita had no time to recover from such a tough loss and was defeated by Mayfield High School in the State Playoffs, bringing Bonita s historic run to an end.

As a result of this exciting ride, the Bearcats gained numerous awards and accomplishments. Ashley M. headlines the team with her CIF Player of the Year honor. This was the first time in program history that a Bonita volleyball player gained this award. Allie L. was named First Team All CIF and was a second team 2009-10 Under Armour Girls High School All-American Award winner, which is bestowed to the nation s top 48 high school senior athletes. In addition, Ashley M. was named Miramonte League MVP, Allie L., Katie K. and Victoria D. all landed on the Miramonte First Team selection. Lauren M. and Jacki C. were named to the Second Team. Melissa K, Danielle L. and Kassandra M. could not go unrecognized and were selected Honorable Mention.

On the heels of a record-setting season, the 2009 Bearcats volleyball team will be one for the ages. Under the tutelage of Coach Adriana Contreras (Daily Bulletin s Coach of the Year) and Assistant Coach Joe Chapin, Bonita looks forward to building upon its momentum from this year well into the future. Although the squad must fill the shoes left by Allie L., Jacki C. and Lauren M., the Bearcats boast a solid foundation of returning players who show promise and a desire to continue this seasons trend of success.

Bonita sweeps aside Palm Springs to reach finals PDF Print E-mail

Article taken from the San Gabriel Tribune

Two years ago, Allie LaPierre, Katie Kirby and Ashley Maxfeldt were young players on a Bonita team that came up just short of the CIF finals, losing in the semifinals.

That trio was not going to let the same thing happen again.

Bonita got off to a strong start and never looked back, sweeping Palm Springs 25-15, 25-14, 25-16 in a CIF-SS Division 3AA semifinal Tuesday night at Bonita High School.

Second-seeded Bonita (18-6) now advances to the CIF girls volleyball finals for the first time in school history, where it will face Miramonte League rival and unseeded Hacienda Heights Los Altos in the finals Friday or Saturday at Cypress College.

"I am just so excited. We made history," said LaPierre, a senior outside hitter who had a match-high 16 kills. "We just wanted to stay focused and play each point like it was 0-0."

"Tonight was revenge for two years ago," said Kirby, a junior outside hitter who had 11 kills and 15 digs.
