Bonita Freshmen Team Up With Villains
To Create Next Rube Goldberg Adventure
Famous villains of video, movies, and cartoons invade the workings of Rube Goldberg when the Bonita High School Freshmen Core run riot with their giant Rube Goldberg machine on Tuesday, March 2 at 7:00 P.M. in the Student Union. Another presentation will take place on the following morning, March 3, for nearby J. Marion Roynan elementary school children, beginning at 10:00 A.M.This year, the 105 freshmen break into eighteen groups and select a classic video, movie, or cartoon villain to “play out” as they incorporate it into their Rube Goldberg device. Students must create a Rube Goldberg machine utilizing found items and assemble them in ways that utilize at least three simple machines, where the machines move in ways that indicate the action of a particular villain.

FRESHMEN RIDE DESIGN COMPETTION FOR MOCK CONTRACT FULL OF FUN AND IMAGINATION
A turbulent ride through vintage video and arcade games, a circus adventure through a world of unicorns, dragons and mythological creatures, and a trip back to the voyage of the Titanic are just a few of the rides in store for competition by the Bonita High School Accelerated Freshmen Core next year when they present their ride design concepts to the visiting staff of Thinkwell Design and Production of Burbank at La Verne City Hall on Friday, January 15 (10:00 A.M.-1:30 P.M), 2010.
The 105-student group of gifted freshmen are gearing up their imaginations and working up their presentations to compete for a mock contract from Thinkwell Design.
“This project has the potential to combine academic skills with real-world experience at a level rarely attempted with ninth-graders” said Freshmen Studies and AP History teacher Bob Turner.
This year’s rides have names like “Zapped,” “Cirque Bizurk,” and “Titanic: Final Destination,” to name a few. A yearly competitive project utilizing a combination of skills in their English, Physical Science, and Freshmen Studies classes, the 105 freshmen have divided themselves into twelve groups, or “design firms,” where they research, design, and build scale models of theme rides to “pitch” or simulate potential use by the people at Thinkwell.
